A court in Los Angeles has ruled that Freemasonry is a form of “religious exercise,” comparable to Christianity and Islam. “We see no principled way to distinguish the earnest pursuit of these (Masonic) principles … from more widely acknowledged modes of religious exercise,” said the ruling. The case involved the Los Angeles Scottish Rite Cathedral and the Scottish Rite Cathedral Association of Los Angeles. The groups had leased out the cathedral for events such as dances, in apparent violation of zoning rules that restrict it to Masonic events only. The Masons had sought relief under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons (RLUIPA) act. But even though the court ruled the Masons are a religious group, it said RLUIPA didn’t apply to them, so it was a Pyrrhic victory.

Both my grandfathers were Masons. When I was a kid, one of them showed me his guidebook, which technically he wasn’t supposed to do because Masons are sworn to secrecy about their rituals. No harm done — I didn’t understand any of it, in part because it was full of strange symbols. Basically, I always figured Freemasonry was a practice that sort of supplemented Christian belief. I just wonder if the secrets of the Masons were revealed in court?

In Scottish Rite Cathedral Association of Los Angeles v. City of Los Angeles, (CA Ct. App., Oct. 3, 2007), a California court of appeals rejected a RLUIPA challenge by the Los Angeles Scottish Rite Cathedral Association to the revocation of its certificate of occupancy for its Masonic Temple. The appellate court rejected the trial court’s holding that Freemasonry is not a religion. The appellate court found “no principled way to distinguish the earnest pursuit of these [Masonic] principles … from more widely acknowledged modes of religious exercise.” However the court held that the Masonic Temple, which was now largely being rented out for commercial as well as non-profit events, was not protected under RLUIPA. Vatican to publish ‘Da Vinci Code’ documents clearing the Knights Templar after 700 years

The Knights Templar, the medieval Christian military order accused of heresy and sexual misconduct, will soon be partly rehabilitated when the Vatican publishes trial documents it had closely guarded for 700 years.

A reproduction of the minutes of trials against the Templars, “‘Processus Contra Templarios - Papal Inquiry into the Trial of the Templars’” is a massive work and much more than a book - with a 5,900 euros (£4,113, $8000) price tag.

“This is a milestone because it is the first time that these documents are being released by the Vatican, which gives a stamp of authority to the entire project,” said Professor Barbara Frale, a medievalist at the Vatican’s Secret Archives.

“Nothing before this offered scholars original documents of the trials of the Templars,” she said in a telephone interview ahead of the official presentation of the work on October 25.

The epic comes in a soft leather case that includes a large-format book including scholarly commentary, reproductions of original parchments in Latin, and - to tantalise Templar buffs - replicas of the wax seals used by 14th-century inquisitors.

Only 799 numbered copies of the work have been made.

One parchment measuring about half a metre wide by some two metres long is so detailed that it includes reproductions of stains and imperfections seen on the originals.

Pope Benedict will be given the first set of the work, published by the Vatican Secret Archives in collaboration with Italy’s Scrinium cultural foundation, which acted as curator and will have exclusive world distribution rights.

The Templars, whose full name was “Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon”, were founded in 1119 by knights sworn to protecting Christian pilgrims visiting the Holy Land after the Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099.

They amassed enormous wealth and helped finance wars of some European monarchs. Legends of their hidden treasures, secret rituals and power have figured over the years in films and bestsellers such as “The Da Vinci Code”.

The Knights have also been portrayed as guardians of the legendary Holy Grail, the cup used by Christ at the Last Supper before his crucifixion.

The Vatican expects most copies of the work to be bought up by specialised libraries at top universities and by leading medieval scholars.

The Templars went into decline after Muslims re-conquered the Holy Land at the end of the 13th century and were accused of heresy by King Philip IV of France, their foremost persecutor. Their alleged offences included denying Christ and secretly worshipping idols.

The most titillating part of the documents is the so-called Chinon Parchment, which contains phrases in which Pope Clement V absolves the Templars of charges of heresy, which had been the backbone of King Philip’s attempts to eliminate them.

Templars were burned at the stake for heresy by King Philip’s agents after they made confessions that most historians believe were given under duress.

The parchment, also known as the Chinon Chart, was “misplaced” in the Vatican archives until 2001, when Frale stumbled across it.

“The parchment was catalogued incorrectly at some point in history. At first I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was incredulous,” she said.

“This was the document that a lot of historians were looking for,” the 37-year-old scholar said.

Philip was heavily indebted to the Templars, who had helped him finance his wars, and getting rid of them was a convenient way of cancelling his debts, some historians say.

Frale said Pope Clement was convinced that while the Templars had committed some grave sins, they were not heretics.

Their initiation ceremony is believed to have included spitting on the cross, but Frale said they justified this as a ritual of obedience in preparation for possible capture by Muslims. They were also said to have practised sodomy.

“Simply put, the pope recognised that they were not heretics but guilty of many other minor crimes — such as abuses, violence and sinful acts within the order,” she said. “But that is not the same as heresy.”

Despite his conviction that the Templars were not guilty of heresy, in 1312 Pope Clement ordered the Templars disbanded for what Frale called “the good of the Church” following his repeated clashes with the French king.

Frale depicted the trials against the Templars between 1307 and 1312 as a battle of political wills between Clement and Philip, and said the document means Clement’s position has to be reappraised by historians.

“This will allow anyone to see what is actually in documents like these and deflate legends that are in vogue these days,” she said.

Rosi Fontana, who has helped the Vatican coordinate the project, said: “The most incredible thing is that 700 years have passed and people are still fascinated by all of this.”

“The precise reproduction of the parchments will allow scholars to study them, touch them, admire them as if they were dealing with the real thing,” Fontana said.

“But even better, it means the originals will not deteriorate as fast as they would if they were constantly being viewed,” she said.

Lucy, Daughter of the Devil, is an ‘adult cartoon’, part of the Turner Broadcasting owned Cartoon Network’s late night line-up. It is a 10 minute CGI comedy show; the plot follows an eccentric and im-witted Satan, who is living in San Francisco, trying to convince his 21-year-old daughter, Lucy, to assume her role as the Antichrist. Along the course of their adventures, Lucy meets and begins to court ‘DJ Jesús’, a laid back techno DJ who turns out to be the second coming of Christ. The show is heavy with blasphemous shocks, but as it is sadly lacking it wit, it rates among the lower end shows featured in the ‘Adult Swim’ programming block; without the talents of H. Jon Benjamen, the brilliant voice actor who providing the voice of Satan, the show likely never would have made it past the pilot.

This Sunday an episode of the show entitled ‘Human Sacrifice’ will air, in which the Devil is summoned to attend a ritual human sacrifice at the Bohemian Grove in Northern California, held to honor a senator who has been chosen to be elected as the next president. DJ Jesús is chosen to serve as the sacrificial victim, and is lured to the Grove under the pretext that he will be DJing the ‘most amazing dance party/orgy/political summit on the planet’, which he is told is like the movie ‘Eyes Wide Shut’, except Alan Greenspan and Bono will be there.

The Grove, as it appears in the show, was clearly modeled after actual footage of the site which appeared in Alex Jones’ film ‘Dark Secrets Inside Bohemian Grove’, or from the memory of someone who has attended. The ritual begins with torches lighting up the night, and the crowd, which contains ‘half of Washington’, chanting ‘Hail Satan’. The Devil appears and declares that ‘ten presidents have announced their candidacy in front of this unholy alter’, before introducing a comedian to give a pre-sacrifice routine of poop jokes that the Devil had written for him in exchange for his soul. A bit of cartoon mayhem ensues with DJ Jesús escaping the sacrifice in order to provide the music for the crowd. The show finishes by zooming out of an aerial view of the grove, displaying its real-life location in Northern California.

I have no doubt that many people within the Truth Movement will attempt to claim that this show was intended to somehow ‘expose the elite’, just as they did when South Park made a brutal mockery of 9/11 Truth. I do not believe that this is the case. In recent years we have seen several examples of this type of public display of the occult nature of the ruling elite, all of which, save Kubrick’s ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ and a couple others, have been done through some form of comedy. It is my assertion that orders for this kind of exposure must in some way trickle down from the top, or it would not be allowed at all.

Their motivation in doing this is part of what Alice Bailey called the ‘externalization of the hierarchy’, a process through which those occult masters who have ruled the planet throughout history voluntarily expose themselves and their true nature. This is to be a slow process where we, the public, are gradually familiarized with the concept through the use of gradualism. Comedy shows are the most effective way of doing this, as they put us in such a mood that we are not thinking about what we see in a serious or rational way, and are thus much more susceptible to being familiarized with concepts that would normally evoke fear or revulsion if they were not presented in such a light-hearted manner.

Expect to see more and more of this type of thing in the future.

Vatican to clear Knights Templar of heresy

The mysteries of the Order of the Knights Templar could soon be laid bare after the Vatican announced the release of a crucial document which has not been seen for almost 700 years.

A new book, Processus contra Templarios, will be published by the Vatican’s Secret Archive on Oct 25, and promises to restore the reputation of the Templars, whose leaders were burned as heretics when the order was dissolved in 1314.

The Knights Templar were a powerful and secretive group of warrior monks during the Middle Ages. Their secrecy has given birth to endless legends, including one that they guard the Holy Grail.

Recently, they have been featured in films including The Da Vinci Code and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

The Order was founded by Hugues de Payns, a French knight, after the First Crusade of 1099 to protect pilgrims on the road to Jerusalem. Its headquarters was the captured Al-Aqsa mosque on the Temple Mount, which lent the Templars their name.

But when Jerusalem fell to Muslim rule in 1244, rumours surfaced that the knights were heretics who worshipped idols in a secret initiation ceremony.

In 1307, King Philip IV “the Fair” of France, in desperate need of funds, ordered the arrest and torture of all Templars. After confessing various sins their leader, Jacques de Molay, was burnt at the stake.

Pope Clement V then dissolved the order and issued arrest warrants for all remaining members. Ever since, the Templars have been thought of as heretics.

The new book is based on a scrap of parchment discovered in the Vatican’s secret archives in 2001 by Professor Barbara Frale. The long-lost document is a record of the trial of the Templars before Pope Clement, and ends with a papal absolution from all heresies.

Prof Frale said: “I could not believe it when I found it. The paper was put in the wrong archive in the 17th century.”

The document, known as the Chinon parchment, reveals that the Templars had an initiation ceremony which involved “spitting on the cross”, “denying Jesus” and kissing the lower back, navel and mouth of the man proposing them.

The Templars explained to Pope Clement that the initiation mimicked the humiliation that knights could suffer if they fell into the hands of the Saracens, while the kissing ceremony was a sign of their total obedience.

The Pope concluded that the entrance ritual was not truly blasphemous, as alleged by King Philip when he had the knights arrested. However, he was forced to dissolve the Order to keep peace with France and prevent a schism in the church.

“This is proof that the Templars were not heretics,” said Prof Frale. “The Pope was obliged to ask pardon from the knights.

“For 700 years we have believed that the Templars died as cursed men, and this absolves them.”

Blackwater is more than just a “private army”, much more than just another capitalist war-profiteering business operation. It is an army operating outside all laws, outside and above the US Constitution and yet is controlled by people within and outside our government whose allegiance is primarily to the foreign Vatican state. In other words, Blackwater is a religious army serving the Pope in Rome through the Order of Malta, which is itself considered under international law, as a sovereign entity with special diplomatic powers and privileges. Like Blackwater, the Order of Malta is “untouchable” because it is at the heart of the elite aristocracy.

The Knights of Malta is not merely a “charitable organization”. That’s just an elaborate front, as should become clear to you later. As the name Sovereign Military Order of Malta confirms, it is a military order based on the crusader Knights Hospitaller of Jerusalem and is interwoven with Freemasonry. Most people have never even heard of SMOM, much less that it is a part of Freemasonry. But that is the way the aristocratic elite like it.

One of the symbols of the military orders of the Vatican, the double-headed eagle emblazoned with the Maltese cross, signifies omnipotent royal dominion over both East and West. The orb signifies temporal dominion over the globe of Earth, and the scepter signifies control over the spiritual and religious impulses of humanity. This eagle symbol is used in the masonic rite of Memphis and Misraim, under which it reads, “Order Out of Chaos”, the Hegelian method of crisis creation. It is found on the seals of many European and Eurasian nation states including that of Russia, indicating direct Vatican control over those countries. It symbolizes the desire of a predatory elite with virtually unlimited resources, to totally dominate the entire world under a New World Order global government system using secrecy, manipulation, coercion and terror with the ends justifying the means.

The two-headed eagle emblem of the Byzantine Empire (Roman Empire) on a Red Shield was adopted in 1743 by the infamous goldsmith Amschel Moses Bauer. After all, what was their favorite symbol after the swastika? The Maltese Cross of course!

These SMOM knights are behind most of the trouble in the world and they must be exposed as the criminals that they are. They are not nice people helping the poor, though they use good people in the lower ranks as useful idiots. They are behind drug-trafficking, assassinations, most wars, communism, fascism, feudalism, theocracy, Nazism, Zionism, globalization, crime-syndicates, major terrorist events, a new torture inquisition, total information surveillance, economic collapses, social demoralization and seek to completely enslave the human species in a global Big Brother totalitarian regime as they kill off the majority of us in the process. In fact, all of it has either come to pass or is in the process of being implemented. We are on the brink of WWIII which has been entirely staged by these profoundly evil men. Therefore, we have no time left for pussyfooting around.

An American investigative journalist compared the US firm Blackwater, the biggest security services provider in post war Iraq, to the Knights of Malta.

The company is currently in the midst of a controversy after some of its 20,000 personnel stationed in Iraq killed a number of civilians.

In his book, ‘Blackwater: The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army’, Jeremy Scahill links the modern security firm to the Knights of Malta.

The writer argues that “Blackwater’s employees… share the same religious zeal of ancient crusaders”, the Egyptian weekly newspaper Al-Ahram reported.

Now the Swiss procurator Dick Marty has sent documents regarding the “CIA’s flying prisons” to the European Parliament and names two Blackwater subsidiaries – Presidential Airways and Aviation Worldwide Services. The Giovanni Claudio Fava document on behalf of the European Parliament says the two companies used CASA C-212 planes, usually used to transport paratroops and big cargoes and also able to land on improvised landing spots.

Blackwater has repeatedly cited Rumsfeld’s statement that contractors are part of the “Total Force” as evidence that it is a legitimate part of the nation’s “warfighting capability and capacity.” Invoking Rumsfeld’s designation, the company has in effect declared its forces above the law — entitled to the immunity from civilian lawsuits enjoyed by the military, but also not bound by the military’s court martial system. While the initial inquiries into Blackwater have focused on the complex labyrinth of secretive subcontracts under which it operates in Iraq, a thorough investigation into the company reveals a frightening picture of a politically connected private army that has become the Bush Administration’s Praetorian Guard.

The Sovereign Military Order of Malta, also known as the original Sovereign Military Order of St. John of Jerusalem, is a closed fraternity of the Roman Catholic Church. Its initiated members must be Catholic and have served in the military. They participate in secret ceremonies and feudal ritual dress, and embrace a strong class/caste mentality as part of their initiation into Rosicrucian dogma.

The upper grades are fastidiously aristocratic and must be able to display a family coat-of-arms dating back at least 300 years in unbroken succession from father to son. The Sovereign Grand Master of the order is recognized as a head of state, and his authority is ensured by his secular ranking as a Prince, and his ecclesiastical ranking as a Cardinal. Under international law this organization has independent Sovereign status, which assures nationalistic loyalty from its members, above and beyond allegience to their own country–they also have Permanent Observer status at the United Nations. The order and its members have been proven to be linked with the “Rat Run”, the post-WWII escape route used by high-ranking Nazis and death camp scientists from defeated Germany to the Americas. US Theocons Fight Battle in Iraq
Many has been written about the privatization of the Iraq war, but in his new bestseller book Jeremy Scahill sheds much needed light on the ideological roots of the largest US private mercenary firm and its links to the theocons and the Christian militia Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Prince, writes Scahill, shows how “politically powerful Christian fundamentalists and Neocons are pressing forward with their battle for what they call ‘freedom’ and ‘democracy.’” He has connections with conservative Catholic groups and funds rightwing organizations through his Freiheit Foundation. Senior Blackwater executives such as Joseph Schmitz do not only subscribe to the theocon ideology but are also members of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, a Christian militia that had a mission of defending territories the Crusaders captured from Muslims.

Schmitz, says Scahill, “comes from one of the most bizarre, scandal-plagued, right-wing political families in US history.” The Sovereign Military Order of Malta began as a Christian charity in Al-Quds in 1080 to provide care for poor and sick pilgrims to the Holy Land. After the conquest of the holy city in 1095 during the First Crusade it became a Catholic Military Order. After the Muslims restored Al-Quds, the Order operated from Rhodes and later from Malta where it administered a vassal state under the Spanish viceroy of Sicily. The Order’s fighters, known as the Knights Hospitaller, helped the Crusaders in raids on Muslim countries near the coasts of Italy, including Tunisia, Libya and Morocco. The Sovereign Military Order of Malta is now a state located in Rome and is recognized by 50 countries worldwide.

Blackwater USA is the brainchild of Erik Prince — a former Navy SEAL and son of Edgar Prince, a wealthy Michigan auto-parts supplier — described by Scahill as a “radical right wing Christian mega-millionaire” who is a strong financial backer of President George W. Bush, as well as a donor to a host of conservative Christian political causes.

In the 1980s “the Prince family merged with one of the most venerable conservative families in the United States,” when Erik’s sister Betsy — nine years his senior — married Dick DeVos, whose father Richard, founded the multilevel marketing firm Amway. The two families exercised enormous political influence both inside and outside Michigan. “They were one of the greatest bankrollers of far-right causes in U.S. history, and with their money they propelled extremist Christian politicians and activists to positions of prominence,” Scahill writes.

The European Parliament report describes these as shell companies operating as subsidiaries of Blackwater USA, ‘an important contractor for the CIA and the US military’ which bases the planes in Malta….Tracking technology shows that the plane was en route from Canada to Greenland two days before it was sighted at Mildenhall: the internet software does not extend beyond American airspace, but the expert explained that its route would be consistent with a refuelling stop in the Arctic – it only has a range of about 2,000 miles – followed by a further refuel in East Anglia, before heading to Malta.

The media hype surrounding Frank Albo - dubbed “Canada’s Dan Brown” by the Premier of Manitoba - is not as exaggerated as one might suspect. A more apt analogy, perhaps, is Dan Brown’s main protagonist, Robert Langdon: the scholarly academic thoroughly versed in occult symbolism, on a quest to uncover that which has been hidden in plain view.

The Hermetic Code: Unlocking One of Manitoba’s Greatest Secrets is a repackaged offering from a 15-part series which originally appeared in the Winnipeg Free Press. The book is beautifully put together and lavishly illustrated with large, high resolution color photography. The narrative is from the perspective of Winnipeg Free Press reporter, Carolin Vesely.

The story unfolds at a suspenseful pace as Albo elucidates the mysteries of the building to the inquiring reporter. Vesely’s knowledge of the esoteric is nonexistent. This is a good thing. Having to explain to the layman - step by step - the intricacies and multiple layers of symbolism in the building, the reader becomes invested in the journey of discovery.

Frank Albo’s command of western esotericism is impressive. With the accumulated knowledge of early religions and mythology, ancient temple design, Hermeticism, Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism and the Kabbalah, Albo’s assessment of the building’s hidden meaning is authoritative and complete. Moreover, as he proves, the main players surrounding the design and construction of the building were equally well-versed in the language of the occult.

The Manitoba Legislature Building is patterned after an initiatory temple. In such a case certain characteristics must necessarily be present. The Legislature Building has all the required ingredients - without a doubt.

It begins with the Sacred Geometry of the overall design - the Golden Ratio of the Pythagoreans, incorporated prominently in temples and churches for thousands of years. Into the lobby of the building one is confronted by protective beasts or temple guardians (apotropaic icons) in form of sacred bulls, lion-heads, bukrania, Medusa and Athena. A “Room of Protection,” says Albo, an integral component of ancient temples. The room is a perfect square, 66.6 feet on each side, alluding to the number 666. Albo’s explanation of this - perhaps surprising to the average reader - has to do with the reverence of occultists for the works of the legendary hermetic alchemist, Cornelius Agrippa.

The importance of Numerology is apparent throughout. There’s a Grand Staircase in the Room of Protection, for instance, which has thirteen steps, leading to five archways with panels having five, eight-petalled gold roses. The numbers 5, 8 and 13 are repeatedly invoked. (Astute readers will immediately grasp the significance of the sequence.)

Other features of the building include the Pool of the Black Star - the temple altar - with allusions to Ishtar, Pan, Hermes and Aphrodite. The eight-pointed Black Star, together with the patterns on the floor of the rotunda above, are suggestive of the first degree of Freemasonry. On the roof is the Golden Boy statue - a representation of Hermes Trismegistus - flanked by two Sphinxes carved with a hieroglyphic dedication to the Egyptian Sun God Re. The list goes on, and on. “The building is laden with Masonic themes and incorporates the order’s ritual symbolism,” Albo says to Vesely. “As you walk through it, you’re unknowingly participating in a type of interactive Masonic drama. You’re undergoing rites of purification and moral perfectibility, facilitated by the iconography and sacred geometric proportions.” (p. 37)

Beyond the architecture itself the murals and paintings suggest the artists, Frank Brangwyn and Augustus Tack, were also privy to the occult grand scheme behind the building.

An important line of investigation includes the occult milieu surrounding chief architect Frank W. Simon. Although Simon has never been confirmed to have been a member of any Masonic Lodge, Albo shows that his training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris most definitely had a profound influence. The students of this school studied ancient temple design, Vitruvian theory, Sacred Geometry and Greco-Roman mythology. The instructors - Simon’s included - were all Freemasons. Albo even speculates that Simon might have been connected with the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

As an historical exploration, first published in a mainstream newspaper, this offering is certainly unique. Each revelation is fortified with color illustrations and explanatory side bars. It’s a large, glossy, coffee table-type publication. The stunning photography of the Legislature Building alone is worth the price of the book.

It will be quite interesting to follow the career of Frank Albo. I, for one, am looking forward to it. Presently a scholar at the Department of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents at the University of Amsterdam, Albo is also a doctoral candidate in the History of Architecture at the University of Cambridge, UK. While reading the Hermetic Code, I couldn’t stop thinking that other famous architectural landmarks have long awaited a similar treatment. After six years of study on a single building, will he attempt to unlock the mysteries of yet another? Frank Albo’s enthusiasm seems unstoppable, and his chosen area of expertise increases the likelihood that this will indeed be the case.

Masons and Odd Fellows might seem mysterious, but both organizations played an important part in the development of Greater Victoria

They are iconic secret societies with close historical links to wealth and power. Victoria Masons and Odd Fellows have been part of the fabric of the city by doing charity work, leading commerce and providing political leadership since the Gold Rush era. Recently, however, they’ve faced significant membership challenges that raise questions about their future.

Their exclusivity, secret methods of recognition, cryptic ceremonies and perceived influence have long stimulated people’s fears of clandestine plots. They are thought to be the hidden hands behind the selection of important leaders, the operation of high finance and monumental diplomatic manoeuvres.

No group has been identified with this elitism and mystery more than the Masons. Their origins are shrouded in secrecy. A preponderance of Masonic literature traces the group’s beginnings to Scottish stonemason guilds in the 14th century, but many other authors have pointed to a lineage that runs back to the Knights Templar – and even as far back as ancient Egypt.

The beginnings of Masonry in Victoria can be traced to the Gold Rush, with the first recorded meeting taking place in 1858. The society’s members have been pillars of the Island community as lieutenant-governors, premiers and entrepreneurs. They’ve done important charity work, their names grace local schools and alleys, and their keystones are found in many of Victoria’s most precious heritage buildings. Despite this illustrious past, the society faces serious modern challenges, says Stephen Godfrey, the Grand Master of Masonic orders in B.C.

“Our largest membership in B.C. was in 1962, but since then it has been in decline. We have remained steady at about 10,000 people now.”

A significant sign of the times is the absence of DeMolays in Victoria– a Masonic order for youth aged 11-20 that once thrived and functioned as a precursor to membership in the official lodge. Public perceptions have undoubtedly played a part in the Mason’s membership challenges. Stereotypes about the importance of bloodlines or candidates needing to be politically powerful and wealthy are legion.

Godfrey bristles when asked about these stereotypes and says that the group does not recruit from any particular demographic.

“People out there believe more about Masons than is actually happening. We aren’t as closed as we appear.

“The only secrets are our words of recognition and our modes of recognition. Masonry is open to anyone of any religion and any race. We welcome all men. People join because they want to learn about values, virtue and philosophy.”

According to Godfrey, the minimum requirements for a nominee to join the group include believing in a supreme being and being of good moral character. Officially, a person must have at least six months’ local residency and be nominated by at least two existing Mason members. Women’s membership is limited to specific concordant bodies within the group.

Like the Masons, the Odd Fellows are another local secret society whose origins and future are unclear.

Authors such as Joseph Powley have traced the group’s beginnings to Roman times, while official Odd Fellows’ literature points to 18th-century England. Odd Fellows claim their eccentric name was given to them more than 250 years ago by the English public, who believed that individuals extending aid to strangers were “odd”.

The group has been active in Victoria since 1864 and its heritage building on Douglas Street (with its mysterious three-link chain moniker) has intrigued the public since 1887.

Odd Fellows, who are dedicated to “Friendship, Love and Truth”, provided health care and assistance to orphans and widows before Canada’s social safety net was created. They continue to do many different kinds of charitable work, but their capabilities have become limited as their membership has declined.

“There used to be a Lodge in every major town in B.C. and now we’re down to 18,” says Odd Fellow Grand Secretary Dino Fiorin.

“Our peak was pre-World War 2. Ever since, we’ve seen a steady aging and loss in membership. Our average age at the moment is between 65 and 70. We have no junior lodges in Victoria.”

Like the Masons, the Odd Fellows require potential members to be of good moral character and believe in a supreme being. A committee of members then assesses candidates.

The membership of Masons and the Odd Fellows are similar, in that membership is based on closely guarded secrets that include passwords for their ranks or “degrees”, and special greetings. Unlike Masons, however, they welcome women to all their organizations.

The Masons and Odd Fellows – two organizations that thrived for so long and have left such an indelible mark on Victoria’s society through architecture, business and charity work (taking care of children, the sick and widowed) – face important questions about how they can ensure their future survival.

This process may involve changing their approach to an issue that has, ironically, brought them the most attention; namely, secrecy.

Italians marched Thursday in Bologna, a city in north-central Italy, to commemorate the victims of the 1980 bombing in its train station which left 85 people dead and some 200 injured, local media reported.

Relatives of the victims took part in the march from the central Piazza Nettuno to the station where Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi made an unannounced appearance.

Prodi, who is a native of Bologna, said in a brief speech that the massacre was carried out by terrorists “who tried to destroy democracy in this nation and who were defeated on moral, cultural and political levels.”

In a message to Bologna Mayor Sergio Cofferati, House Speaker Fausto Bertinotti stressed the need to uncover the full truth behind the station bombing because “a nation which cannot look back at its past with a full understanding cannot plan for its future,” said the reports.

P2 was also involved in Gladio’s strategy of tension (Gladio being the name of Italy’s secret “stay-behind” North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) paramilitary organization).

The Mormons proceeded to establish Masonic schools in Utah after fleeing Nauvoo. Brigham Young then sought permission from England’s Freemasons for a public charter so the Mormons could have their own Masonic rite. The request was refused, but Young can be seen, nevertheless, wearing Masonic pins in historic photos.

Diebold, the Ohio computer election systems manufacturer, remains under a cloud regarding irregularities in its tabulation of the 2004 US presidential vote, which led to the reinstalling of George W. Bush. So it may be productive to explore what appears to be a significant Diebold-Mormon link, as well as observe how the Mormons are jockeying for a major political role in America. First some background on Mormon politics. Historically, Mormons tend to vote Republican, perhaps forever scarred by being driven out of Missouri and elsewhere in the 1830s — some tarred and feathered — by Democrats. Mormons subsequently threw their support to the Whig party, forerunners of today’s Republicans.

The LDS church has made no fanfare about Diebold CEO Walden O’Dell being a “Saint”. And O’Dell’s promotion of the serving of alcoholic beverages at political fundraisers would further imply that he is not — alcohol being a Mormon no-no.

But he was a major contributor to George W. Bush’s reelection campaign, organizing a $1,000-a-plate dinner in August 2003 and encouraging supporters to donate $10,000, although Diebold’s website now indicates high profile employees of the company should keep a politically neutral public face.

O’Dell’s public reticence to be seen as a GOP stalwart followed an infamous letter to supporters the day before Ohio’s Republican secretary of state Ken Blackwell chose Diebold as one of three suppliers for the state’s e-voting machines. In the letter O’Dell said he was, “committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president next year.”

Blackwell, a former football player, is a savvy long-time Republican party loyalist, taking on the tough missions when asked, like swaggering through the streets of Srinagar investigating the Kashmir crisis during some of its most violent days in the early 1990s.

It would be surprising if, as an African-American, Blackwell were Mormon. According to Thomas W. Murphy, an anthropologist at Edmunds College in Washington who is an expert on the Book of Mormon, people of color are led to believe that “BoMor” is “a historical record of their ancestors who were reportedly cursed by God with a dark skin for their wickedness” and told that if they give up their own traditions and convert to the Christian gospel, they can again become “white” or “pure”.

Nevertheless, New York’s Harlem does have its own Mormon church now, and pop star Gladys Knight has become a big tithe for the “Saints”.

It is highly significant, though, that Diebold’s former COO, Wesley Vance, was a prominent member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as a graduate of church-funded Brigham Young University.

Vance, for several years was in charge of Diebold’s global operations, including research and development, manufacturing, sales and purchasing. He was paid $787,000 in 2003 as COO and had 10,000 Diebold stock options — with 10% of his annual income likely tithed to the LDS church. Vance died in the spring of 2003 at age 45 while piloting his own plane, crashing southeast of Columbus, Ohio.

On January 22, 2002, Diebold announced the acquisition of Global Election Systems, then a manufacturer and supplier of electronic voting terminals and solutions. The total purchase price, in stock and cash, was $24.7 million. Global Election Systems subsequently changed its name to Diebold Election Systems, Inc.

Are there other key Diebold associates who are LDS in the mix of 14,000 employees? Without a doubt.

Vance was also in charge of human resources for Diebold, and it is known that the LDS, as a socially-conscious organization, looks out for its own.

As Sally Denton and Roger Morris point out in their book, The Money and the Power: The Making of Las Vegas and Its Hold on America:

FMR Corporation — Fidelity Management & Research Corporation — is Diebold’s largest shareholder, with 5.7 million shares worth over $313 million. FMR’s former president, Robert Pozen, aside from having served as associate general counsel to the SEC, was secretary of economic affairs for Massachusetts governor/LDS celebrity Mitt Romney. Romney is a frontrunner for US president on the Republican 2008 ticket.

Fidelity is the world’s largest mutual funds company. It is in the hands of a major Boston family –father and daughter, Ned and Abby Johnson — with Steve Jonas running things for the Johnsons. (Click here: DBD: Major Holders for DIEBOLD INC - Yahoo! Finance )

Fidelity, has in the past organized fundraisers for Romney, as has the syndicate’s venture capital firm, Bain Capital of Boston, which Romney founded in 1984 and where he served as CEO for 17 years.

And the Boston Mormon money connections don’t stop there.

Kim B. Clark, long-time dean of America’s premier breeding pool for entrepreneurs — Harvard Business School — has just become the new president of Brigham Young University in Idaho.

During his time at Harvard, Clark simultaneously served as bishop of the LDS congregation in Cambridge. Prior to Harvard, Clark played a role in the US Department of Labor in the Ford administration, so it is likely he would be a Romney supporter. In fact, BYU has its own Romney Institute established in honor of Mitt Romney’s father, the former auto exec and governor, George Romney.

The Mormon church has a history of playing politics, putting up its own prophet, Joseph Smith, for a US presidential run in 1844.

The church’s adoption of various Masonic principles — like secrecy — around the time that Smith ran for president seemed designed to make Mormonism more palatable to US politicos, many of whom similarly embraced Masonry. The very word “constitution” so central to American politics may have been adopted from the Freemason’s Book of Constitution.

However, Joseph Smith’s political run was short-lived. He was gunned down that same year for promoting polygamy.

As the story goes, he flashed the Masonic distress symbol as he jumped from the window of the Carthage, Illinois jail into a mob armed with muskets. Some apparently Mason muskets.

Smith was initiated into the Masons by Abraham Jonas, a Jewish politician (a distant relative of Fidelity’s Steve Jonas??), who himself was running for office and hoped to secure the Mormon vote by bringing Smith and his followers into the brotherhood. Smith’s “sublime prince of the royal secret” Masonic honors were rushed along in less than the required 30 days, after which Smith persuaded his followers to join. The ranks of the Masons swelled by a third from 2,000 to 3,300 after the Mormon initiation.

According to Brigham Young’s wife number 19, Anna Eliza Webb Young, Brigham referred to the Mormon temple endowment ceremony as “Celestial Masonry” because there were such close parallels to the “tokens, signs and penalties” of the Masons — including the Mormon and Mason secret handshakes. J.H. Beadle, former editor of the Salt Lake Reporter and Clerk of the Utah Supreme Court wrote an “expose of the secret rites and ceremonies of the deluded followers of Brigham Young” describing the endowment ceremony. He dedicated his book, Polygamy or the Mysteries and Crimes of Mormonism (1882), to the “women of America, whose sympathies are ever active in behalf of their suffering and oppressed sisters in the hope that it will interest them in the condition of the women who are living in moral bondage in Utah”.

The Mormons proceeded to establish Masonic schools in Utah after fleeing Nauvoo. Brigham Young then sought permission from England’s Freemasons for a public charter so the Mormons could have their own Masonic rite. The request was refused, but Young can be seen, nevertheless, wearing Masonic pins in historic photos.

The question is: When will the Mormon secret handshakes, smoke & mirrors and buck stop?

The financial grip of the LDS behemoth on America is profound. The church, which takes tithes from its members, no-questions-asked, established Zions Bancorp, for instance, in 1873. Brigham Young called it Zions Savings Bank and Trust Company. It now has 400 branches in eight states including Texas, although the church has sold majority control.

And there have been others that have left teethmarks — including “Jack Mormon” Parry Thomas’s Bank of Las Vegas, which Sally Denton and Roger Morris note the FBI referred to as “the Mob’s bank”. Denton and Morris also cite the Eccles, one of the richest banking families of the 20th century, channeling “enormous, sometimes untraceable sums” to Thomas’s Bank of Las Vegas in the 1950s. The Eccles owned First Security bank in Salt Lake City. One of the Eccles brothers served as chairman of the Federal Reserve for over a decade and was an architect of the US banking system. The University of Utah’s genetics center now bears the Eccles name.

Then, of course, a private planeload of cash left Las Vegas — “millions of dollars earned and tithed in the city” — every Monday for the LDS treasury in Salt Lake City, according to Denton and Morris:

Directly or indirectly, the use of LDS (Latter-day Saints) church money or simply the funds of predominantly Mormon family and business depositors to finance Las Vegas gambling — to say nothing of aid and stimulation for an international criminal network — would have been a fateful revelation then and later.

Eight men have just been indicted from the fundamentalist polygamist cult on the Utah-Arizona border on charges related to plural marriage — a drop in the bucket for the crimes of a so-called religion that has robbed ten generations of women of a fair shake at life by burning polygamy into its scripture. As long as the LDS can keep up the pretense that it is a religion rather than a cash cow (France has forbidden LDS commercial sales there), there will be runaway profits for the “Saints” that will continue to compromise America’s political process, as in the Diebold debacle.

Some of you might remember the movie or Saturday Night Live skit called Wayne’s World back in the 1990’s. A classic line uttered from the participants, Garth and Wayne was “We’re not worthy. We’re not worthy.”

So whom might I check with to find out if I was worthy? Donna Bierlein, the current Worthy Matron and Susan Phenix, Past Matron of the Gladwin White Clover Chapter #84, Order of the Eastern Star, that’s who.

You also might recall that a month ago I did a column on the Gladwin Masonic Lodge #397 and what some people think is a ‘secret’ fraternity called the Masons. I soon discovered after that column came out there are people who think the Eastern Stars are also some kind of cult. As I found out with the Masons – wrong!

Actually, the Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world that both men and women can join. There are approximately 10,000 chapters with over 1 million members under the General Grand Chapter, which oversees the ‘Stars’ worldwide.

The Grand Chapter system oversees the local chapters and both Donna and Susan have served as state committee members. Susan has also served as an officer (the Grand Warder) at the state level. The White Clover Chapter #84, which as in the case of a Mason Lodge number, indicates in 1891 Gladwin established the 84th chapter in Michigan.

The Order of the Eastern Star was started in 1850 by a lawyer/educator named Robert Morris, a Freemason from Boston. The organization was created to give the entire family a social purpose with similar but separate association with the principles of the Masonic Temple.

For a man to belong to the Stars he must be a member in good standing with the Masons and a woman member must have a Masonic affiliation. I’d write out the list of ways to qualify but let’s just say there are 19 different ways to make that connection.

Still the rumors persist about the Eastern Stars being a secret society and even some extremists think they participate in occult practices. What I found was, as in any organization, there are certain things you learn after you join.

So my mission was to start my own “Mythbusters” investigation. Despite the fact that I probably could be bribed with several of the Stars great meat pasties, which they make as a fundraiser three times a year, I tried to be impartial. And the fact that they offered me an opportunity to read the entire Eastern Star Ritual Book right up front made me very suspicious.

These ladies were either “throw him off with kindness” crafty or not very secretive. Actually I discovered they were both.

ROR: Sometimes the Eastern Star is referred to as the female Masons. What exactly is the Order of the Eastern Star organization?

Susan: The Eastern Star is a charitable organization with both men and women. Both the Masons and Eastern Star are very family oriented and place an emphasis on family involvement.

Donna: Because the Masons are exclusively for men, the founder Robert Morris felt it was important to have an organization that included women. The ritual book has the five stories of the heroines of the bible, which are the fundamentals and principles of our organization.

ROR: Was it originally a women’s organization?

Susan: No, women have always been the leaders of the Eastern Star through the Worthy Grand Matron at the state level and local chapter’s Worthy Matron but men have been included from the beginning as long as they are Masons in good standing.

ROR: There are the five points in your organization symbol. Can you tell me the names, colors and symbols they represent?

Donna: The names of each point (heroine) are Adah, Ruth, Esther, Martha and Electa. Each one represents the beliefs that Eastern Star is based on.

Susan: They were each assigned a color to distinguish themselves and a symbol that represents their story. Adah the daughter, her symbol is the sword and veil: she was slain by the sword and she lifted her veil so her father could see her. Ruth the widow, a sheaf of wheat; she gathered food by gleaning the wheat. Esther the wife is a crown and sceptor; she was a queen and saved her people. Martha the sister is a broken column, which represents no one can be bigger than life. And Electa the mother is the cup; that represents charity and hospitality.

ROR: As in the Masons, there seems to be a feeling there are secrets in the Eastern Star. How do you answer the questions about the organization being secretive?

Donna: We do have words that can be used to identify a sister or brother within the organization, which you learn after you’ve joined but those really aren’t secrets.

Susan: You receive exclusive or privileged information that makes our organization special to belong to, as with any fraternal group.

ROR: Do you consider the Eastern Star a religious organization?

Donna: There are no religious restrictions other than believing in a supreme being. Personal beliefs can differ as in the Christians, Muslims or Jews but all are welcome.

ROR: How long has the Gladwin Easter Star chapter been chartered and why is it called the White Clover chapter?

Susan: We were chartered in 1891 as the 84th chapter in Michigan.

Donna: As far as our chapter being called White Clover, we don’t know why (laughing). I’ve researched and can’t find out why. There must have been a reason but we just don’t know what it was. And just to clarify one misunderstanding from your previous column on the Masons, your column implied the Masons purchased the Presbyterian Church in 1902. In fact, the Eastern Stars purchased the church. Also the Masons sit in the East and we stand in the East.

ROR: Well, I’m glad for the chance to set Off The Record straight. How many members did the Eastern Star chapter have in its peak years and what is the current membership?

Donna: We had real good attendance until the late 1990’s with the membership at 154. As of last October, the membership was 71.

ROR: The Beaverton Eastern Stars merged with the Coleman chapter quite a while ago. Why didn’t they join the White Clover chapter?

Donna: They merged with Coleman in the 1995-96 year.

Susan: The primary reason they went to Coleman was the time factor, getting it done in time. We were dark (not conducting meetings) in July and August and they wanted the transfer completed before October. Coleman at that time stayed open in the summer months.

ROR: What charities do the Eastern Stars support?

Susan: Locally we support the Special Olympics, Gladwin skate park, PTO, the Hospice duck race; we give scholarships to local students, the Heart and Diabetes associations, and the affiliate youth organizations like Rainbow Girls, Job’s Daughters and the Order of DeMolay.

Donna: We don’t turn down very many.

ROR: What do Stars do for fun?

Donna: We have a great time working together on various projects. You saw us yesterday making those meat pasties. We were managing to have fun while working.

ROR: That’s definitely one fundraiser I support and yes, you did seem to be having a good time and poking some fun at me. Let me ask you this. Do you think there is too much pageantry in your organization…because you do have several formal ceremonies?

Donna: I wouldn’t call it pageantry. The initiation ceremony is a part of telling the stories of our organization, which is very important.

Susan: We do wear formals for special occasions but are also very formal in our introductions during meetings, which is also a part of our traditions.

ROR: How long have you each been involved in the Eastern Star?

Donna: I’ve been involved for 25 years.

Susan: Since 1972, so I guess that would be 35 years…I’m a 3rd generation Eastern Star.

ROR: What is the one thing you want people to know about the Eastern Star?

Donna: As mentioned before, there is a lot of emphasis on giving back to the community. We don’t shout out about our accomplishments and contributions and so many of the things are behind the scenes. But we’re very proud of what we do.

ROR: And you should be. Thank you, ladies.
